You see my eTextiles peeps are spread out all over the world and I wanted a real time way to connect with them as well as bring new creatives into the wearable computing fold. So, two weeks ago I faced the camera, smiled and invited the world into my studio on Tuesday nights at 8:08 PM Denver time.

Last Friday I was lucky to attend Dr. Valerie Steele's lecture on The Black Dress at the Ruth Funk Center for Textiles. I could mention how fabulous the supporters are, the quality of the museum's show, how outstanding Dr. Steele's lecture was and more more more because every detail of the event was perfect. But that would make you feel as though you missed the best event of the season.

So last week I began enforcing structural grid in both my creative and professional life.

I found this luscious woven stainless steel fabric Giovanna Imperia's booth at Handweavers Convergence.

It is silken sexy to the touch, has a resistance of about 1 ohm per foot, can be bent into a form and is sold in sheets that are 8" by1 meter for $15/sheet.

The product is so new it is not mentioned on Giovanna's website yet, but she does have lots of other lovely products including stainless and copper threads.

While at Maker Faire in the Bay Area a young lady came up to my booth and began asking question. Good questions about eTextiles, conductive thread and weaving! So we chatted a bit about her next project and I gave her my card suggesting she contact me if she needed any help.

It was then she announced she was also from Denver! So I pounced on the opportunity for a studio assistant and asked her to email me when she returned to Denver, that I would like her to come work at my Studio.

I was so excited about this connection that I spoke about it in my interview with artfuture. I told Dale and Kate about it. And then I waited.

All summer I waited. Until she popped up at the Denver Club Workshop open house where she helped me answer question, sew conductive circuits and problem solve short circuits.

At the end of the day I again invited her to my studio.
The next morning I had an email from her!

This past weekend H. came over and we warped her loom with a conductive thread and purple fantasy yarn warp so she could make a blinky bracelet.

And then we sewed the positive and negative traces on to her jean jacket. This was the first time she used a sewing machine so we made some frustrating grrrrrrrrrrrrr noises and stuck to the task. By the end of the day she had sewn this pattern and selected computer parts from Aniomagic.

Next time we get together I expect to she her in the latest blinky bling!

I am always exactly where I should be

As I crawled out of the shopping bag tent someone called my name.
I don't go out much in Denver so I was startled that anyone knew me, let alone this smiling friendly face.

To my surprise Nate was at RedLine's art opening. We chatted Burning Man, DPW, The Man Build, computer parts, weaving conductive cloth, non-disclosures, project development, costumes, Feathers, his dad (whom I worship), friends, family, travel and more. It was the pick-me up I needed RIGHT THEN.

Do you know how great it is when your electronics companies 'get' who you are and what you do?! No matter how large SparkFun becomes I believe Nate will remain the humble, interested, curious, gracious and concerned person that I met in 2007. Its a blessing that he is a leader of our electronics community.

Thank you (gives a little nod to the heavens) for placing me in the right moment in this complex and fascinating time line.

At Creative Camp 2010™ Rachael asked why I designed the fabric for Apex Dance costumes as I did. My unconscious mind spoke aloud about datums, chaos and the interweaving of repetitive patterns. About color, lighting and changes of wave length. About dance phrases, musical notes and the interrelation of dance, music and fabric.

When I exhausted my thoughts she went to the beginning and queried - What is datum?

For this costume the datum is set by the vertical black lines. These standard points of measure never cross as they formulate the base structural rhythm of the fabric.

Not only do these lines form a visual cue of the textile pattern, this black stitching increases the stability of the fabric across the bias. This anchoring strength is helpful as l overlay the skirt’s fabric with a rhythm of texture, color, weight and pattern from the embellishment stitching.

As I watch Apex practice their dance phrases I see an analogy. Certain movements are repeated creating the datum of the dance.

As I listen to Zoe Keating’s music I find the originating beat to create the datum of the song.

I am excited to watch the rehearsals and 3 August performance when our individual datum measurements, as represented in textile, movement and song, will interweave across Chautauqua's stage to create a performance of beauty, complexity and originality. Very excited indeed!

"A datum refers to a line, plane, or volume of reference to which other elements in a composition can relate. It organizes a random pattern of elements through its regularity, continuity, and constant presence.

For example, the lines of a musical staff serve as a datum in providing the visual basis for reading notes and the relative pitches of their tones. The regularity of their spacing and their continuity organizes, clarifies, and accentuates the differences between the series of notes in a musical composition.

To be an effective ordering device, a linear datum must have sufficient visual continuity to cut through or bypass all of the elements being organized."

The Fred Tomaselli show at Skidmore's Tang Museum is STELLAR!
This was the first time I have seen his work and I fell in love with Echo, Wow and Flutter. It reminds me of my squiggle file paintings and Candy.C. Only this is massive pieces is created with actual pills.

When its Cintra Wilson's NYT review of French designer Isabel Marant's new SoHo store.

If you don't have time to read the entire piece here is the moral to the story:

"Ms. Marant has undeniably good taste. Ultimately, however, she confirms my thesis that fashion consciousness isn’t about fashion as much as it is about consciousness.

Fashion is permission. You may give it to yourself; or if you’re rich, you may entrust your choices to the care of top designers. A respectable label may inspire you to believe that your old Army jacket is more cutting-edge than other Army jackets — and any dry cleaner who reads your inside tag will surely be impressed.

BUT even in a potentially meaningless universe where civilizations crumble, institutions collapse and creatures fade into extinction, there are still a few mathematical certainties: things of genuine quality tend to eternally recur, especially if they’re made of heavy cotton duck or decent leather. Nobody ever looks like an idiot in a good peacoat, and (a trick I learned from movie wardrobe girls) people tend to notice how comfortably you rock your silhouette far more than they notice the safety pin holding your hem together or the fact that your buttons don’t quite match. (In fact, these charming delicacies of distress are mimicked by top designers, to create the illusion of character and provenance.)

On Church Street I stood underneath a tree that was having a riotous outburst of pink flowers, and I may be far from wise, but I knew that no matter how much money I threw at it, it wasn’t going to get any prettier. The point is to recognize a meritocracy in things of value, regardless of their low points of origin, current trendiness or future invisibility. Quality is quality, period. All else is corporate fear, hype, vanity and vexation of the spirit. Foolish is as foolish does."

A few weeks ago Surly, hard core member of Burning Man's Department of Public Works, was biking to The Dead End in Austin and was hit by a taxi. The cab driver called 911 and Surly was revived by a team of EMT's. He remains in ICU awake, moving and Surly as ever, yet needs our help raising funds for the giganormous medical bills.

Sorry for not having more pics, but Mother Nature had her way with us at this shoot. It was about 40 degrees with gale force winds. Everyone was holding down a lightstand, the model was glad to have long fur and I stole a moment to capture this snap.
